What is Espresso? (Hint: it’s not coffee on the go)
Espresso is not a type of roast as many coffee companies lead you to believe. So, do not be deceived when you see a bag of coffee that is labeled “espresso roast” (perhaps what they mean to say is that particular blend of coffee is best for making espresso). In fact, espresso is really a particular way of brewing coffee.
Espresso was cultivated in Italy during the quest to create the perfect cup of coffee. The idea behind espresso is to extract the nectar of the coffee bean in order to bring out its fullest flavor during the brewing process. Typically, this involves the combination of a high amount of pressure, water and heat during a short period of time resulting in a quick extraction. Over the years, the method has been modified according to time, pressure and temperature. Moreover, there have been many theories about the best approach for brewing an espresso, but the goal is still the same: coffee with a great taste.
Just as there are many theories about the best way to brew espresso, there are many theories about what origins go into making an Espresso blend, and to what level you roast that blend. One thing is certain, a dark/ burnt roast does not mean you have the ideal espresso. For instance, a lighter style is preferred in Northern Italy giving the coffee a thick and rich texture. Here at One Village Coffee, we are looking forward to introducing our take on the classic blend to create your perfect espresso.
