Honduras Trip (Part II)
San Juancito: Welcome to the Jungle.
On the second day we set out to visit a coffee plantation in the surrounding countryside of Tegucigalpa. It was the most remote place I have ever been to. Many of the coffee plantations are located high in the mountains because of the elevation Arabica coffee beans require for growth. San Juancito was no exception. It’s a small village comprised mostly of farmers and their families high in the mountains of Honduras.
We met Saoul, the Plantation Manager, who became our guide for the day. He took us around the plantation throughout the mountain and explained each part in the process of harvesting the coffee bean. Everyone was friendly with us and helpful in answering the unending barrage of questions we had. It was amazing to see how a small farming community scattered around the mountainside can produce such large quantities of coffee on a continual basis. And because of La Central the plantation now has key pieces of farming machinery to speed up the harvesting and cleaning process. We found out La Central also brought electricity to the entire mountain, and provides a school for the farmer’s children.
