Honduras Trip (Part III)
The MAMA Project, Inc: The MAMA Project Inc is an organization that provides medical treatment and community development programs to rural villages in Honduras.
Here is the simple reason why One Village Coffee supports the MAMA Project Inc: they believe working to make one village a better place is meaningful. After leaving Tegucigalpa, we drove four hours north (I won’t get into how I feared for my life the entire time in the anarchy of the Honduran highways) and finally arrived at the MAMA house in a location that probably coined the phrase “middle of nowhere”. This community is normally described as having extreme poverty, sick children, broken homes, and little hope. The MAMA Project Inc is working to change this description.
The MAMA Project Inc set up camp in a community most organizations would overlook because of its remote location and small size. However, the MAMA Project Inc saw an opportunity to transform a dying community by becoming one of its members. They built a medical shelter in which families can live up to one month while being treated for illness and malnourishment. Moreover, these families learn how to improve hygiene and basic living practices. Now, instead of seeing children too weak to stand because of starvation and poor hygiene, you see them playing soccer and laughing, you see them being kids.
Right now the MAMA Project measures success one family at a time. Their goal is to eventually measure success one community at a time.
Despite the success story of the community in which we visited, there is still so much to be done within the rural villages in Honduras. Consequently, One Village Coffee is proud to be supporting the MAMA Project. It is not everyday you get to be part of a project that’s physically bringing a community back to life in the fullest sense.
