Commitment in a Cup - Egypt
Stephen’s Children is an organization based in Cairo, Egypt. It reaches out the “poorest of the poor” living in the garbage dumps of Cairo. Over 500,000 families currently live in extreme poverty among the garbage dump, and many of them are one-parent homes with no husband or father. Many children suffer from abuse and malnourishment. They also have no opportunity for education or securing any type of job.
Stephen’s Children has a staff of over 1,200 members that is able to reach 24,000 families, operate 60 medical clinics and education centers, and ministers to over 21,000 children. The Stephen’s Children staff is lead by Maggie Gobran, often known as Mama Maggie, who has committed her life to the poorest of Cairo. Mama Maggie and the Stephen’s Children staff regularly visit families each week to provide friendship, support and counseling. Children are able to attend camps in order to experience a new environment, participate in discussion groups, and have fun. Vocational training is also provided for Children who have left school or need part-time work while finishing their studies.
Stephen’s Children is slowly bringing hope to the hopeless, and One Village Coffee is proud to support their mission. Our goal in 2008 is to provide the means for 80 children to attend their educational centers. Learn more at www.stephenschildren.net.

I see that Steve Hackmann is head of fundraising for Stephen’s Children, so I guess this reply might be for him.
I am interested in making a donation to support the work of Stephen’s Children with the Zabaleen in Cairo, Egypt. I live in Bahrain now, but spent 5 years in Cairo where the needs of the garbage collectors were evident every day as they came around to pick up refuse in the neighborhood. Please let me know how might make a donation. Thank you.
