HOW OUR NEW MICRO-LOTS HELP ORGANIC FARMING

As you know if you read Woody’s most recent blog, we are very excited about our upcoming COMSA Co-op micro-lots from Honduras.  In addition to producing many great organic coffee varieties, COMSA is dedicated to their ability to grow those coffees consistently and efficiently.  In order to achieve this, the co-op has invested in chromatography equipment (chromatograph) and we are supporting their efforts by paying them an extra $.10 for each pound of micro-lot coffee beans we purchase.

Now what, you may be thinking, is chromatography?

According to Science Olympiad.org:

Chromatography is a method used by scientists for separating organic and inorganic compounds so that they can be analyzed and studied. By analyzing a compound, a scientist can figure out what makes up that compound. Chromatography is a great physical method for observing mixtures and solvents.

The co-op uses chromatography to analyze the soil or any fruit grown to determine if they are growing organically, and to see what nutrients it might be lacking.   It takes a lot of the guess work out of why one harvest or particular crop yields more and/or better coffee beans than another.

The COMSA co-op does a lot for its members regarding their soil, and they will do as much as they can to help its community.

COMSA, as a co-op wanted the chromatograph to benefit its new and existing members. If you are a current member of COMSA, you can bring your soil for testing, find out which nutrients and minerals are present, and which are deficient. If something in your soil is lacking, COMSA provides a range of organic (homemade) liquid treatments that you can apply to make your farm more fertile.

These organic fertilizers are free of charge for any members who wish to improve the soil quality of his/her farm. If you are not a member and wish to be, you must bring your soil for testing to ensure that it is organic. (Andrew Blyth, Royal Coffee NY)

We are happy to partner with COMSA in this way to continue their sustainable farming practices and provide you with delicious coffee! #ovcstewards

Your fellow coffee fanatic,

Andrea
