The Three Pillars of Sustainable Coffee: People, Planet, and Profit

So…What Does Sustainability Really Mean?

Hi, I’m Laura Adams, co-owner of One Village Coffee. As I shared in the opening quote above, sustainability isn’t just a business strategy for us—it’s a deeply held value. At One Village Coffee, it shapes how we work, who we partner with, and the choices we make every day. For better or worse, ‘sustainability’ is one of those words that gets thrown around a lot, so I want to break down what it means to us here at OVC. It’s how we stay connected to the people growing the coffee, the team roasting it, and the folks drinking it (hey, that’s you!).

It’s not about being perfect. It’s about trying to do things in a way that’s thoughtful, honest, and better for everyone involved.

…And It’s Not Just About Recycling (Though We Do That Too)

When people hear “sustainability,” they usually think of things like cutting waste, using less energy, and protecting the planet. All true—and all important. We are actively working to measure and offset our carbon footprint. But around here, that’s just one piece of the puzzle. We look at sustainability through a three part lens:

People — building respectful, long-term relationships with farmers, supporting our team, and showing up for our communities.
Planet — roasting more efficiently, using fewer resources, and trying to leave the earth better than we found it.
Profit — running a business that can keep doing this good work for the long haul

We're also proud to be a Certified B Corp and a member of 1% for the Planet—two ways we keep ourselves accountable and make sure we’re walking the talk.

Let’s break it down a little further..

It Starts With the Farmers

Coffee starts long before it hits our roaster or your kitchen counter.

The importers we work with support farmers who are small producers and pour a lot of care into growing high-quality coffee. But they also face big challenges—like unpredictable weather and unstable coffee prices that can make it hard to plan for the future.

That’s where specialty coffee really makes a difference. Unlike commodity coffee (which often pays below the cost of production - making it impossible for farmers to invest in better farming practices or forces them out of the business altogether), specialty coffee focuses on quality. Farmers get better prices, more consistent income, and long-term relationships that help them invest in things like healthy soil, shade-grown crops, water conservation, and their families and communities.

World Coffee Research recently shared this article from EatingWell. It states that climate change—especially stronger, drought-inducing El Niño events—is lowering coffee yields and raising costs, which is part of the reason we’re seeing coffee prices on the rise. But paying a bit more for sustainably sourced coffee helps farmers reinvest in their land and future.

When we pay fairly for coffee, it doesn’t just make better brews—it builds stronger farms, healthier ecosystems and more resilient communities. Everybody wins.

What Sustainability Looks Like in Our Roastery

Once the beans make it to our roastery in Lansdale PA, we do our best to keep things running with care—from how we roast, to how we ship, to what we toss (or better yet, reuse).

We use energy-efficient Loring roasters, use recyclable coffee bags, and reuse pallets until they basically retire themselves. We’re always asking: Can we do this in a smarter, simpler, and/or more sustainable way? When it comes to business efficiency, Matt (my husband and co-owner) is a star player.

We were able to consolidate supply chains for Backyard Beans Coffee Co + One Village Coffee in 2023 when Backyard Beans took over the One Village Coffee brand. This cut out redundancy in shipping, warehousing, producing and behind the scenes business management. Together, the brands compost hundreds of pounds of coffee grounds per week! We will soon be expanding that effort in composting our chaff as well (Chaff is the thin, papery skin that comes off coffee beans during roasting).

Giving Back: Who We Support Through 1% for the Planet

Every year, we give a portion of our sales to organizations doing amazing work—because sustainability shouldn’t stop at our doorstep. These organizations are doing the ground level work that supports coffee communities.

World Coffee Research – helping protect the future of coffee
Project Waterfall – providing clean water sources to coffee growing communities
Food for Farmers – improving food security in coffee-farming communities
Grounds for Health – providing women’s health services where coffee is grown
The Chain Collaborative – supporting grassroots development led by local communities

These are passionate, boots-on-the-ground groups making real change—and we’re proud to support them. We know we’re nothing without coffee farmers!

Why It All Matters

Sustainability, for us, isn’t just a checklist—it’s a way of caring.

It’s the farmer planting trees on her land. It’s our team fine-tuning a roast to bring out the best flavors. It’s you, choosing coffee that does a little more good in the world.

At the end of the day—when you enjoy a cup of One Village, you’re not just getting a great coffee. You’re part of a community that believes in showing up, doing better, and building something that lasts.
